Practise safety before independence grows

Children may begin playing with classmates, joining servers and managing more of their own activity. This is the time to rehearse what to do, not only explain rules.

Their online world may include
  • multiplayer games and private servers
  • class group chats
  • video platforms and livestreams
  • first personal devices or accounts
Prepare for
  • moving from public chat to direct messages
  • gifts or game currency from unknown players
  • requests for photos, voice chat or personal details
  • being told an adult will take the device away if they tell
A conversation starter

People online are not automatically safe because they like the same game. If anyone asks for a secret, a photo or another app, pause and check with me first.

Keep specialist guidance current.

Platform controls and age rules change. Check ProtectKidsOnline.ca and each platform's official parent or safety documentation when reviewing an account.
