AI-generated intimate images can cause real harm
A fabricated image does not make the humiliation, coercion or safety impact imaginary. Families and schools need a response that centres the young person.
AI tools can be used to create or alter a sexualized image that appears to depict a real young person. The image may be fake, but the targeting, humiliation, threats and disruption are real.
Do not make proving the image fake the child’s job
A young person may face sharing among peers, impersonation, threats, exclusion or demands for money or real images. Start by preserving their safety and dignity. Avoid repeating the image, confronting suspected students publicly or asking the young person to explain the incident again and again.
Immediate steps
- Tell the young person they are not to blame and involve them in decisions where safety allows.
- Preserve account names, links, messages and the context needed for a report without redistributing the image.
- Report the content and accounts through the platform.
- Use Cybertip.ca for suspected online child sexual exploitation and NeedHelpNow.ca for image-related support involving someone under 18.
- Schools should follow their safeguarding, privacy, evidence and law-enforcement procedures rather than improvising an investigation.
